Wheeler Road
Wheeler Road is a major thoroughfare that runs throughout southeast DC. Our team was tasked with creating five sets of curb extension murals as part of a rapidly installed road diet around several schools. The infrastructure improvements designed by DDOT were built with the goal of creating safer pick-up and drop-off zones for students, increasing visibility of pedestrians to drivers, and encouraging slower driving speeds.
This was the first βofficialβ major traffic calming project we embarked on, and we learned countless lessons throughout the process, ranging from installation techniques to how traffic calming measures work. The design was inspired by the mascots of the schools that face the road, and vibrant nature imagery, which was led by Ann Gill. Our hearts are with the family, neighbors, teachers and loved ones of Kaidyn Green, a 9-year-old who was struck by a speeding vehicle on this road upon exiting his school just prior to the installation of this project. We remain committed to the belief that every traffic death is preventable.
